Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2019

This legendary red wine originates from the Pauillac appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde Estuary in Bordeaux, France. The estate was acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, but it was under the visionary leadership of his great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, that it achieved global prominence, pioneering chateau bottling in 1924 and artist-designed labels in 1945. In 1973, it became the only winery ever elevated to First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification; today, it remains under the dedicated ownership of the Rothschild family.

Wine Description

The 2019 Chateau Mouton Rothschild is an intense garnet red with a distinct purplish hue. The nose is highly expressive and precise, revealing aromas of cassis, blackberry, and black cherry mingled with rich layers of cedar, cigar wrapper, and violets, accented by mineral and liquorice undertones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, and multi-dimensional, enfolding powerful yet rounded tannins with a succulent sweetness and a core of fresh black fruit. It is characterized by an elegant, seamless profile and a long, resonant finish that features hints of graphite and spices. This blend consists of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, with an ABV of 13.5%. While the estate follows meticulous hand-farming and sustainable practices, the wine is not certified organic.

Food Pairing

This robust First Growth is best paired with high-quality meat dishes such as a perfectly grilled entrecôte, roast beef, or a rack of lamb with rosemary. Its structured tannins and complex fruit profile also complement game meats like venison and wild boar, as well as rich, earthy dishes featuring truffles or porcini mushrooms. For a cheese course, it pairs excellently with hard, aged varieties such as Comté or vintage Cheddar.

Vintage Quality

The 2019 vintage in Pauillac is considered exceptional, beginning with a record-warm winter followed by a summer that balanced extreme heatwaves with welcome rain in July and August. These conditions, followed by a long, clear harvest period, allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve optimal ripeness and high sugar concentration while retaining essential acidity. The resulting wines are noted for their self-balancing ability, offering both power and a refined, satin-smooth structural elegance.
