Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2019

Introduction

This red wine originates from France, specifically from the Pauillac subregion of the Médoc in Bordeaux. Established in the late 17th century, the estate became known as Château Pichon Baron following the marriage of Jacques de Pichon Baron de Longueville to the daughter of the estate's creator, Pierre de Rauzan, in 1694. Since 1987, the winery has been owned by AXA Millésimes, and under the leadership of Managing Director Christian Seely, the winemaking philosophy has shifted toward a meticulous 'parcel-by-parcel' approach, ensuring only the highest-quality fruit from the oldest vines is used for the Grand Vin.

Wine Description

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2019 is a dark garnet-purple colour with vibrant violet hues. The bouquet is extraordinarily precise and intense, offering a lavish aromatic mix of blackberries, blueberries, cassis, and licorice, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful yet remarkably elegant, displaying a fleshy, velvety texture and deep vertical resonance. It is characterized by its seamless freshness and firm, finely integrated tannins that lead to a persistent finish with hints of black fruit preserves and sea salt. This blend consists of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot—the highest proportion of Cabernet ever used at the estate—and has an ABV of 14.5%. While the winery is an active leader in sustainable viticulture and environmental protection, this bottling is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from 2029 through 2065.

Food Pairing

The muscular structure and elegant depth of this Pauillac make it an ideal companion for high-quality meat dishes. It pairs perfectly with roast leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary, beef tenderloin with a red wine reduction, or braised short ribs. Its savory and cedar-toned profile also complements roasted game birds, wild mushroom risotto, and mature hard cheeses like Manchego or aged Comté.

Vintage Quality

The 2019 vintage in Pauillac was exceptional, defined by a hot, dry summer that produced grapes with high phenolic potential and concentrated sugars. Despite the heat, timely rains in late September helped stabilize sugar levels and preserve essential acidity. The winemaker's skill in navigating these conditions resulted in a wine that combines the classic power of the region with an open, sunny quality unique to this vintage.
