Sena Red Blend 2021 - 1.5 Litre Bottle

This iconic red wine originates from the Aconcagua Valley in Chile, specifically from a 42-hectare single vineyard located in Ocoa, about 40 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Established in 1995 as a joint venture between Eduardo Chadwick (of Viña Errázuriz) and the legendary Robert Mondavi, Seña was created with the mission to prove that Chile could produce world-class "First Growth" quality wines. The estate is a pioneer in South American viticulture, operating with a philosophy deeply rooted in biodynamic farming to authentically express its unique hillside terroir.

Wine Description

The 2021 Seña is a deep ruby red with violet highlights and is widely considered one of the finest and most elegant vintages in the estate's history, earning a perfect 100-point score from some critics. The bouquet is intensely fragrant and complex, revealing layers of strawberries, cassis, and rose petals framed by nuances of clove, cocoa, and fresh mint. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and remarkably pure, showcasing a vertical structure with juicy acidity and ultra-refined, fine-grained tannins. Flavours of blackcurrants and dark chocolate are balanced by a savory, mineral tension that leads into a persistent, seamless finish. The 2021 blend consists of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec, 17% Carmenere, and 6% Petit Verdot. It has an ABV of 14% and was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels (70% new) and 10% in large oak foudres. The wine is produced from certified organic and biodynamically grown grapes.

Food Pairing

The structural elegance and vibrant acidity of this blend make it a sophisticated partner for high-end cuisine. It pairs exquisitely with herb-crusted rack of lamb, lamb shank confit, or roasted duck breast. Its complexity also complements well-marbled steaks, beef Bourguignon, or pan-fried quail. For vegetarian options, consider a hearty vegetable borscht, wild mushroom risotto, or a selection of aged hard cheeses.

Vintage Quality

The 2021 vintage in the Aconcagua Valley is defined by moderately cool conditions, following the path of other classic years like 2016 and 2018. A slow, steady ripening season with no extreme summer heat spikes allowed the grapes to achieve perfect phenolic maturity while maintaining lower alcohol levels and exceptional aromatic finesse. This "cooler" profile resulted in a wine of great brilliance and tension, possessing extraordinary aging potential that will allow it to evolve gracefully through 2040.
