Marques de Casa Concha Heritage 2020

Introduction

This fine red blend originates in Chile, specifically from the Maipo Valley region and the renowned Puente Alto subregion. The wine pays homage to Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro, the founder of Viña Concha y Toro in 1883. The Heritage wine honours this rich history and the exceptional terroir of Puente Alto, an appellation considered one of the world's most important for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaking philosophy, led by Marcelo Papa, focuses on reflecting a particular origin and showing the potential of each variety and the unique terroir it comes from.

Wine Description

This Bordeaux-style blend is a deep, dark red colour. The varietal composition is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. It offers lush aromas of cherries, blackcurrants, blackberries, and cedar, with notes of black tar, olive, bay leaf, and ash. On the palate, there is a tremendous concentration of flavours, a smooth, almost silky texture, and notes of black pepper and bell pepper. This is a full-bodied red with a firm tannic structure, described as terse, fine-grained, and elegant, leading to a long finish. The wine's style is complex, racy, and savoury, demonstrating good acidity and freshness, which keeps it from being too sweet. The optimal drinking window is suggested from 2022 to 2026. The alcoholic content (ABV) is 14.5% or 14.6%.

Food Pairing

Suggested pairings for the Marques de Casa Concha Heritage 2020 include grilled, roasted, or braised red meats and game. It pairs especially well with sauces that have a touch of acidity, tomato, or wine, or are seasoned with herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and bay leaf. It is also considered a perfect wine for most cheeses.

Vintage Quality

The 2020 vintage in Puente Alto was a very warm year, resulting in grapes that were harvested quite early. While the heat led to a ripe wine, the winemaker successfully maintained good acidity and freshness to avoid any sweetness. The area's semi-arid Mediterranean climate and the strong influence of the Andes Mountains naturally contribute to an approximate 18°C daily temperature oscillation, which extends the grape ripening process and concentrates the flavours and aromas.
