Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino 2017

Poggio Landi Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a distinguished red wine from the Montalcino region in Tuscany, Italy.

The estate comprises 75 hectares of vineyards situated at various altitudes—ranging from 175 to 500 metres above sea level—and featuring diverse soil types. This geographical diversity is central to the winery's philosophy, as it allows for the blending of fruit with different characteristics to achieve a balanced and complex final wine. Owned by Alejandro Bulgheroni and managed under the guidance of oenologist Alberto Antonini, the estate emphasizes a low-intervention approach, utilizing natural yeasts and large neutral oak to allow the Sangiovese grape to express its true varietal character.

Wine Description

This 2017 vintage presents a classic ruby red colour. The aromatic profile is intense and refined, featuring scents of ripe red fruit, black cherry, and blackberries, layered with complex notes of black pepper, liquorice, and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and elegant, offering a persistent freshness and a dense, concentrated fruit core. It is characterized by ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, savory finish that reflects its traditional aging process.

The wine is 100% Sangiovese, hand-harvested from organically grown vines. Following fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, the wine was aged for 38 months in large untoasted French oak barrels, followed by a minimum of six months in the bottle. This 2017 release has an ABV of 14.5% and is certified organic.

Food Pairing

The structured tannins and savory acidity of this Brunello make it an excellent partner for rich, traditional Tuscan cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled red meats, such as a Bistecca alla Fiorentina, and roasted game like wild boar or venison. It also complements hearty pasta dishes with meat ragù, mushroom-based risottos, and aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or seasoned Parmesan.

Vintage Quality

The 2017 vintage in Montalcino was defined by extreme heat and one of the most severe droughts in decades. These challenging conditions resulted in smaller berries and a significantly reduced yield, but the fruit that remained was highly concentrated. While the year demanded careful management in the cellar to avoid over-extraction, the resulting wines are noted for their immediate approachability, opulent fruit profiles, and surprisingly balanced structures despite the warm growing season.
