Marques de Murrieta Capellania 2019

Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía 2019 is a rare and prestigious single-vineyard white Rioja that is often described as having the "soul of a red wine".

Produced by the historic Marqués de Murrieta estate in Rioja Alta, this wine is made exclusively from the Viura (synonymous with Macabeo) grape variety. The fruit is sourced from the centennial Capellanía vineyard, a 6-hectare plot planted in 1945 at the highest point of the famous Ygay Estate (485 metres altitude). The winery's philosophy for this bottling is to create a white wine with immense structure and longevity, updating the traditional "long-aging" white Rioja style for the modern era.

Wine Description

The 2019 vintage presents a bright yellow hue with a golden sheen. The nose is intense and multifaceted, offering aromas of white nuts (macadamias), star fruit, and green pineapple, layered with complex notes of toasted almond, crystallized honey, and beeswax. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and round, yet driven by a "racy burst" of acidity that provides a linear and vibrant structure. It is characterized by its creamy texture, subtle chalky grip, and a long, saline-inflected finish.

The wine is crafted from 100% Viura grapes picked in early September. The must is fermented in concrete vats and then matured for 23 months in new French oak barrels, followed by another 13 months in concrete to refine its balance and elegance. This vintage notably skipped malolactic fermentation to preserve its lively, zesty acids. It has an ABV of 14%

96 Points - James Suckling: "Steely and floral nose of white nuts like macadamias, meringue, star fruit and a touch of green pineapple. Round and full-bodied but surprisingly bright and lively, with vibrant acidity providing the backbone. Really long and pure, while there is also suppleness and fleshiness. From the five-hectare Capellania vineyard, where most of the vines are over 100 years old. One of the best viuras out there. Lovely now, but you should seriously consider aging this."
