Bergstrom Pinot Noir 'La Spirale' 2022
This exceptional red wine originates from the United States, specifically from the Ribbon Ridge AVA, a highly regarded subregion within Oregon's Willamette Valley. Founded by John and Karen Bergström in 1999, Bergström Wines is a family-led estate dedicated to artisan winemaking, now directed by their son, Josh Bergström, who trained in Burgundy. The 'La Spirale' estate vineyard, acquired by the family in 2018, is a beautifully positioned 22 acre southwest facing slope featuring a complex patchwork of more than 14 distinct marine sedimentary soil types. The winery treats this land with deep respect, following a philosophy of non-certified biodynamic and regenerative-ecological farming to coax a pure, ethereal expression of the local terroir.
Wine Description
The 2022 La Spirale Vineyard Pinot Noir displays a jeweled ruby, deep garnet colour in the glass. On the nose, it unveils an alluring and highly fragrant bouquet of dark red raspberries, wild strawberries, and pomegranates, beautifully interlaced with notes of fresh roses, violet candies, Genmaicha tea, and green peppercorn spice. The palate is medium bodied, silky, and precise, delivering an elegant inner sweetness and a crunchy, succulent wave of red fruit flavours wrapped around a savory core of grape-stalk herbs, forest floor, and earthy loam. It possesses a sinewy and terroir-driven texture, balanced by a lively, mouthwatering acidity and fine, edgy tannins that build a detailed, focused structure. The finish is long and energetic, leaving a distinctive trace of sandstone and saline minerality. Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, the grapes were fermented with indigenous yeast and 100% whole clusters before the wine was aged in 228 L French oak barrels, utilizing only 10% to 15% new oak to preserve fruit clarity. Its optimal drinking window spans from mid-2025 through 2036.
Vintage Quality
The 2022 vintage in Ribbon Ridge concluded with a beautiful ripening window that granted the grapes excellent balance, structural freshness, and intense aromatic complexity. Despite early seasonal variations, the fruit achieved superb phenolic ripeness, enabling the creation of remarkably precise, lively, and focused wines with fine-grained tannins.
