Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino 2021

This exceptional red wine comes from Italy, originating from the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino DOCG within the southwest hillsides of the Tuscany region. In 1994, the legendary Piedmontese winemaking family led by Angelo Gaja acquired the historic Pieve Santa Restituta estate, bringing their signature ethos of modern precision and classical structure to Montalcino. The winery’s philosophy focuses on crafting an intricate 'estate voice' by artfully blending fruit from their iconic southwest-facing vineyards with select parcels from the cooler, clay-rich northern zones of the appellation to capture the ultimate harmony of power and finesse.

Wine Description

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino presents a dark, deep ruby red colour in the glass. The nose is graceful and beautifully restrained, releasing subtle aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, and sweet violets, alongside complex undertones of crushed stones, licorice, and savory leather. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is dense, tense, and crisp, displaying a core of saturated black cherry, cassis, and wild herbs neatly balanced by a distinct graphite minerality and vibrant acidity. It strikes a gorgeous balance between natural fruit ripeness and structured power, framed by velvety, tight-edged tannins that provide an elegant, chewy frame. Composed of 100% Sangiovese, the wine was aged for 24 months in oak barriques followed by an additional six months of refinement in cement tanks before bottling. While it shows an approachable, open-knit feel early on, its noble structure indicates an optimal drinking window between 2027 and 2045.

Vintage Quality

The 2021 growing season is heralded as a triumph and a modern classic for Montalcino, defined by excellent conditions that imbued the fruit with striking structural clarity and fresh nerve. The estate's ability to blend fruit from water-retaining clay soils in the north with high-altitude sites allowed the vines to mature evenly, resulting in a successful vintage that mirrors the noble structure and long-term aging potential of the region's finest years.
