Casanova Di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 'Tenuta Nuova' 2021
This concentrated and 'monumental' red wine originates from Italy, within the world-renowned Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation in Tuscany. Founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, the estate was born from a vision to produce exceptional Sangiovese in the then-remote region of Montalcino. Today, Giacomo Neri and his sons continue this legacy, managing approximately 63 hectares across seven distinct sites. The 'Tenuta Nuova' label is a modern legend, specifically conceived by Giacomo Neri to find a southern terroir in Castelnuovo dell'Abate that could yield a uniquely powerful and complex expression of Brunello.
Wine Description
The 2021 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova presents a deep, brilliant appearance and a full-bodied sensory profile defined by its 'seductive energy'. The nose is an intense spice box featuring aromas of crushed roses, incense, and spiced orange peels, layered with notes of blackberry, rosemary, and herbal tea. On the palate, the wine is massive yet remarkably 'weightless', showcasing a dense and saline core of dark fruit flavours paired with a subtle vein of salt. It is characterized by its velvety, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity that creates a 'saturating tension'. The finish is exceptionally long and fragrant, lingering with vivid sour cherry and savory spices. This 100% Sangiovese reached an alcohol content (ABV) of 14.5% and was aged for 30 months in oak tonneaux followed by at least six months in the bottle. While the winery utilizes natural processes and low-impact design, this bottling is not certified organic.
Accolades
Vinous 96 Points - "The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is a total spice box on the nose, with crushed roses, spiced orange peels, incense, raspberry, herbal tea leaves and hints of mint. More lifted and energetic than expected, it displays grace and youthful poise with mineral-inflected wild berry fruits. Vivid sour cherry lingers incredibly long through the finish as fine-grained tannins frame the experience and a bump of residual acidity keeps the mouth watering for more."
Vintage Quality
The 2021 vintage in Montalcino is regarded as a potential 'modern classic', awarded a five-star rating for its exceptional harmony and vibrant acidity. While spring frosts initially reduced yields, a remarkably even growing season allowed for a slow ripening that produced fruit with immense concentration and 'verticality'. Winemakers successfully adapted to the season's warmth by utilizing the estate's high-quality vineyard management, resulting in wines that capture the hedonistic depth of the site while maintaining a fresh, lively counterpoint.
