Antinori Brunello di Montalcino 'Pian delle Vigne' 2006 - 3 Litre Bottle
Antinori Brunello di Montalcino 'Pian delle Vigne' 2006 is a prestigious red wine from the Montalcino region of Tuscany, Italy. The estate, located six kilometres south of Montalcino, was purchased by the Marchesi Antinori family in 1995, the same year as its first harvest. The property spans 184 hectares, with 65 hectares dedicated exclusively to Sangiovese, locally known as 'Brunello'. The winery is named after a 19th-century railway station still located on the property, and its philosophy is centered on a personal interpretation of traditional Brunello that preserves the integrity of the fruit.
Wine Description
This wine exhibits an intense ruby red colour with garnet hues and a core of cherry and raspberry fruit. The nose offers complex aromatics of pressed violet, plums, and white truffles, alongside notes of tobacco, chocolate, and menthol. On the palate, it is full-bodied, broad, and well-balanced, featuring succulent black cherry and crushed herb flavours integrated with fine-grained, chewy tannins. It is noted for a glycerol-like texture and a fine, mineral aftertaste that reflects the clay and calcareous soils of the estate. The 2006 vintage spent 24 months in large oak casks to protect the vibrant elegance of the Sangiovese grapes before bottling. This wine has reached maturity and is drinking beautifully now, showing secondary notes of leather, cedar, and iron.
Food Pairing
The structured body and savory complexity of this Brunello make it an ideal match for succulent dishes with strong, intense flavours. It pairs exceptionally well with a nicely marbled steak, beef tenderloin seasoned with a porcini rub, or a traditional Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina. Its earthy and herbal undertones also complement mushroom and truffle recipes, as well as hearty pasta dishes like pappardelle with wild boar ragout. For a cheese course, consider mature Tuscan varieties such as Pecorino di Pienza or an aged Dutch Gouda.
Vintage Quality
The 2006 vintage in Montalcino is considered extraordinary and a 'legend' for the region, characterized by ideal weather conditions and a sunny, mild September. A rainy winter and wet spring provided enough water to help the vines easily overcome a dry summer, leading to balanced ripeness and a harvest of exceptional quality. The resulting wines are praised for their robust tannic structure, vibrant acidity, and surprising longevity.
