Yangarra GSM 2023

Introduction

Yangarra GSM originates from Australia, within the Blewitt Springs subregion of McLaren Vale in South Australia. The estate was established in 2001 when the Jackson family purchased the historic Lalla Rookh property, which features priceless old vines planted as early as 1946. Under the guidance of winemaker Peter Fraser and viticulturist Michael Lane, the winery operates with a philosophy of producing single-vineyard estate wines that reflect an authentic sense of place through biodynamic and regenerative farming practices.

Wine Description

This red blend presents a deep ruby or dark ruby colour, often featuring purple reflections. The sensory profile is fragrant and layered, opening with aromas of ripe red berries, blueberry, and dark cherry, accented by dried herbs, lavender, and a hint of spice or peppercorn. On the medium-to-full-bodied palate, it is rich and plush, delivering juicy flavours of blackberry, plum, and raspberry balanced by a vibrant acidity and elegant, fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and lingering with savoury notes of earth, salted liquorice, and a touch of oak influence.

  • Varietal Composition: A traditional Southern Rhône-style blend typically dominated by Grenache (42% to 67%), followed by Shiraz and Mourvèdre.

  • ABV: Generally ranges from 13.5% to 14.5%.

  • Organic Status: The wine is certified organic and biodynamic (ACO), and is suitable for vegans.

  • Stylistic Notes: Each variety is handled separately and wild-fermented with a gentle pump-over regime; the wine is matured in a mixture of older French oak foudres, puncheons, ceramic eggs, and amphorae for 8 to 11 months.

Food Pairing

The versatility and balanced structure of Yangarra GSM make it an ideal companion for a wide range of cuisines. Suggested pairings include:

  • Meats: Slow-roasted lamb, grilled T-bone steak, beef brisket, and pork kebabs.

  • Hearty Fare: Cassoulet, Mediterranean-style moussaka, and rich pasta dishes.

  • Savoury Options: Mushroom risotto or charcuterie boards.

  • Cheeses: Complements everything from creamy Brie to aged Cheddar.

Vintage Quality

The 2023 vintage in McLaren Vale was shaped by a cool, wet spring and summer rain, which resulted in balanced canopies and a long ripening window for flavour development. Despite these unique challenges, the season produced expressive wines with bright fruit and fine structure. The 2024 vintage followed a wet winter and dry spring, producing a "picturesque" season that yielded wines noted for their perfume and silky, fresh finish.
