Vintae El Pacto Ojo Gallo 2022

This unique and soulful red wine originates from the Alto Najerilla subregion of Rioja, Spain. Crafted by Viñedos El Pacto (a Vintae project), this wine revives the nearly extinct "Ojo Gallo" (Rooster’s Eye) style—a traditional "claret" where red and white grapes are co-planted, harvested, and fermented together. The winery's philosophy is a tribute to the ancestral viticulture of Cárdenas and the high-altitude, iron-rich clay soils that provide a distinctive mineral character to these heritage "plot blends".

Wine Description

The El Pacto Ojo Gallo is described as a "red with a white soul," presenting a translucent cherry-red colour with a light, Pinot-like depth. The nose is aromatic and complex, offering notes of wild strawberry, raspberry, and pomegranate, woven with Mediterranean herbs like thyme and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is lean, refreshing, and vertical; it forgoes heavy structure for a silky, fluid texture and a vibrant acidic core. It is characterized by its "sapid" and cleansing nature, leading to a mineral finish with hints of pink grapefruit and white chocolate. This blend consists primarily of Garnacha Tinta and Viura (approx. 70/30), with trace amounts of Tempranillo, Malvasía, and Graciano. It has an ABV of 13% and was aged for 10 to 12 months in a combination of 5,000-litre oak foudres and concrete tanks.
