Vietti Barbera d'Alba 'Tre Vigne' 2023
Vietti Barbera d'Alba "Tre Vigne" 2023 is a signature red wine that emphasizes the "everyday elegance" and juicy character of the Barbera grape grown in the heart of the Langhe.
The name "Tre Vigne" (or Trevìe in local dialect) refers to the selection of grapes from three historic vineyard sites: Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d'Alba, and La Morra. Sourced from vines aged between 28 and 43 years, this cuvée is designed to be a more structured and rounded expression compared to its sibling, the Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne. Vietti’s philosophy for this label is to provide a wine that is both accessible in its youth and capable of short-to-medium-term cellar aging.
Wine Description
The 2023 vintage presents a deep ruby-red color with youthful purple edges. The nose is packed with high-toned aromas of ripe red cherries, violets, and vanilla, layered with darker notes of licorice, cloves, and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied and plush, featuring a vibrant "crunchy" fruit core. It is characterized by Barbera’s signature bright acidity, which provides lift and tension, balanced by sweet, integrated tannins and a long, fruity finish with hints of mocha and chocolate.
The wine is 100% Barbera grown in limestone and clay-rich soils. Following a two-week fermentation in stainless steel with daily pumping-over to extract color and flavor, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. It is aged for approximately one year in a combination of stainless steel tanks, French barriques, and large oak casks to achieve a balanced presence of wood that enhances rather than masks the fruit. The 2023 release has an ABV of 14.5%.
Food Pairing
This wine's high acidity and moderate tannins make it an exceptionally versatile partner for "fatty" or savory foods:
Classic Italian: Tomato-based pasta dishes like Amatriciana or Bolognese, lasagna, and wood-fired pizzas.
Meats: Grilled red meats, roasted pork, breaded veal, and traditional Piedmontese game dishes.
Casual Fare: Cured meats (salumi), rich salads, and hearty vegetable stews or bean soups.
Cheese: Best with medium-aged cheeses like Fontina, Taleggio, or Pecorino.
