Tignanello 2022 (by Tenuta Tignanello) - 1.5 Litre Bottle

This legendary red wine originates from Italy, specifically from the heart of the Chianti Classico zone in the Tuscany region. Produced by the historic Marchesi Antinori family—a winemaking dynasty spanning over 26 generations—the wine is grown exclusively at the Tenuta Tignanello estate on a 57-hectare southwest-facing hillside rich in limestone and marl soils. Renowned as the pioneer that ushered Italy into modern winemaking, Tignanello was historically groundbreaking as the first Sangiovese-dominant red to be aged in small oak barriques and one of the first to incorporate non-indigenous French grape varieties into the blend.

Wine Description

The 2022 Tignanello displays an intense ruby red colour with vibrant purple highlights. The bouquet is exceptionally expressive and lifted, opening with striking aromas of red and black cherries, pomegranate seeds, and wild strawberries, layered with fragrant purple flowers, fresh balsamic hints, mint, and a touch of sweet vanilla. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine is poised and complex, showcasing a core of succulent black cherry, plum, and cassis neatly balanced by a distinct graphite minerality. It strikes a gorgeous harmony between fresh, brisk acidity and dense fruit weight, all supported by velvety, fine-grained tannins. The finish is remarkably long, polished, and precise, echoing persistent notes of tobacco, bitter cocoa, and sweet herbs. Composed of 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Cabernet Franc, the wine was aged for 15 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels before undergoing an additional 12 months of refinement in the bottle. It enters its optimal drinking window in 2026 and will cellar beautifully through 2040.

Vintage Quality

The 2022 growing season in Tuscany was defined by intense summer heat, which naturally yielded a more concentrated and fruit-forward wine. Late-season rain events challenged the region, but Tenuta Tignanello's steep, well-draining hillside vineyards proved to be a major advantage, allowing the grapes to reach an optimal and healthy phenolic maturity.
