The Arran Sauternes Cask Finish

Introduction

The Arran Sauternes Cask Finish is a premium single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Arran, Scotland, produced at the Lochranza Distillery. Founded in 1995 by Harold Currie, the distillery is currently owned by Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd., a private group of shareholders. This expression was one of the earliest experimental wood finishes released by the distillery and has since evolved into a core range staple featuring a new bottle design introduced in 2020.

Spirit Description

This unpeated single malt undergoes a double maturation process, initially aging in traditional ex-bourbon oak casks for approximately eight years before being finished in Sauternes wine casks sourced from an artisan producer in Bordeaux, France.

  • Colour: The spirit possesses a warm, golden amber hue.

  • Aroma: The nose is very sweet and fragrant, opening with acacia honey, honeysuckle, and vanilla pastry, followed by bright notes of tinned pineapple, banana, melon, and citrus blossoms.

  • Palate: It delivers a rich, honeyed mouthfeel balanced by a lively zestiness and warm spices. Flavours of creamy vanilla, sultanas, and marzipan emerge, framed by toasted oak and a subtle salty edge.

  • Body: The whisky is characterized by a thick, syrupy, and smooth texture with a well integrated woody warmth.

  • Finish: It concludes with a long and candied finish, where lingering notes of apricot, melon, and honeysuckle are toned down by dry spices like ginger and white pepper.

  • ABV: This expression is bottled at 50%.
