Gordon & MacPhail Speymalt Single Malt from Macallan 2004 #22606603
This exceptional single malt Scotch whisky comes from the legendary Macallan Distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland. Part of the highly acclaimed 'Speymalt' range, it was independently matured and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail. Established in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail is a historic family firm that possesses a long standing, unique relationship with Macallan, famously selecting their own high quality oak casks to be filled with new-make spirit directly from the distillery. This single cask expression, marked as Cask #22606603, was bottled exclusively for the Alberta, Canada market.
Whisky Description
In the glass, this Speymalt single cask presents a deep, rich bronze colour with faint ruby hues. The nose is incredibly flamboyant and seductive, opening with stewed plums, sour cherries, dates, and sticky figs, beautifully intertwined with ginger spice, dark chocolate, and a hint of fine cigar tobacco. On the palate, the whisky is powerful, full bodied, and decadent. It displays an old school edge with a rich concentration of dried fruits, apricot jam, and orange zest, balanced by toasted hazelnuts, white pepper, and undertones of leather and cocoa powder. The texture is remarkably smooth and creamy, masking its high alcoholic volume with absolute elegance. The finish is long, warming, and multi-layered, leaving a lingering trace of sultanas, dry walnut, and sweet mature oak. Distilled in 2004, this expression rested for nearly two decades in a single first-fill American oak barrel that was sherry-seasoned, before being bottled in 2024 at a robust cask strength of 59.1% ABV. It is best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to fully unlock its aromatic density.
