Produttori del Barbaresco - Barbaresco 'Montestefano' Riserva 2020
Introduction
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva 2020 originates from the Piedmont region of Italy, specifically from the historic Montestefano vineyard within the Barbaresco subregion. Established in 1958, the Produttori del Barbaresco is a world renowned cooperative founded by a local priest and 19 growers to rescue the reputation of the region's Nebbiolo grapes. Today, the cooperative unites over 50 members who exclusively produce Nebbiolo, adhering to traditional winemaking methods that prioritize transparency of terroir. The Montestefano vineyard, first released as a single cru Riserva in 1967, is known for its higher clay content and typically produces some of the most dark and austere wines in the cooperative's prestigious range.
Wine Description
This elegant red wine presents a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights. The aromatic profile for the 2020 vintage is especially refined, offering an intricate bouquet of violet, rose, red skinned fruit, forest floor, and new leather, underscored by notes of blood orange, mint, and cedar. On the palate, it is medium to full bodied and polished, delivering juicy flavours of raspberry compote, red cherry, and star anise balanced by a vibrant acidity. The finish is long and resonant, marked by refined tannins and lingering notes of white pepper, minerality, and licorice. This 100% Nebbiolo varietal composition was fermented for 28 days with skin contact before aging for 30 months in large oak barrels followed by nine months in the bottle. It has an alcohol content of 14.5% ABV and an optimal drinking window from 2025 through 2045. While the estate follows sustainable practices, this wine is not certified organic.

Food Pairing
The structured elegance and savory character of Montestefano Riserva make it a versatile partner for rich Italian cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with fresh egg pasta dishes, mushroom risotto, and white or red meats. The wine's polished tannins also complement game dishes such as venison and a variety of mature cheeses.
Vintage Quality
The 2020 vintage in Barbaresco is described as extremely good, characterized by a mild spring and warm summer with regular rain storms that prevented vine stress. While the wines are noted for being a bit lighter in body than some previous years, they are complete and complex with seductive fruit concentration and excellent aging potential.
