Produttori del Barbaresco - Barbaresco 'Montefico' Riserva 2020
Introduction
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Montefico Riserva 2020 originates from the Piedmont region of Italy, specifically from the prestigious Montefico vineyard in the Barbaresco subregion. Established in 1958, the Produttori del Barbaresco is an esteemed cooperative uniting over 50 small family vineyards that exclusively cultivate Nebbiolo. The Montefico vineyard is a south-southeast facing amphitheatre located away from the warm air of the Tanaro River Valley, featuring active limestone soils that contribute to an austere and assertive character in the final wine. The winery's philosophy is rooted in traditional practices, utilizing only large Slavonian oak barrels (grandi botti) to ensure an authentic expression of the terroir.
Wine Description
This structured red wine presents a deep ruby red colour with garnet hues. The aromatic profile is complex and seductive, opening with notes of black cherries, forest berries, and ripe sour cherries, leading into distinct herbal layers of dried rosemary, lavender, mint, and cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied and compact in texture, offering a core of dark-toned fruit balanced by an even acidity and a rich sapidity. The finish is precise, long-lasting, and marked by a characteristic minerality and chalky feel. This 100% Nebbiolo varietal composition was fermented with 28 days of skin contact before aging for 30 to 36 months in large oak barrels and a further 8 to 12 months in the bottle. It has an alcohol content of 14.5% ABV and is suitable for vegans. While the estate utilizes nature-close cultivation, it is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window extends from 2026 through 2050.

Food Pairing
The structured tannins and intense minerality of Montefico Riserva make it a profound partner for savory and robust dishes. It is a perfect accompaniment to fresh egg pastas, mushroom risotto, or pasta dishes topped with truffles. The wine's noble body also pairs exceptionally well with red meats, game such as venison, and braised dishes. For a simpler pairing, it complements a variety of mature or full-flavoured cheeses.
Vintage Quality
The 2020 vintage in Barbaresco is rated as extremely good with points of excellence, producing wines that are complete and complex. While not as full-bodied as some preceding vintages, the season allowed for a fruitier profile with ample richness and texture that provides medium-to-long aging potential.
