Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2018 - 1.5 Litre Bottle

Introduction

Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2018 is a prestige sparkling wine from France, specifically originating from the renowned Champagne region. The house remains independently owned and operated by the descendants of Pol Roger, who established the winery in 1849 in the town of Épernay. This prestige cuvée was first released in 1975 to honour Sir Winston Churchill, who was a close friend of Odette Pol Roger and a devoted fan of the house's robust style. The winemaking philosophy for this cuvée focuses on robustness, maturity, and a full bodied character, traits that the great statesman sought in his personal champagne.

Wine Description

This prestige cuvée presents a radiant mid yellow gold colour with a fine, persistent stream of bubbles. The nose is intricate and well balanced, opening with aromas of white flowers, citrus, and white peach, followed by complex layers of gingerbread, acacia, and lightly toasted hazelnut. On the palate, the wine is sleek, structured, and expansive, delivering a rich core of candied fruit, blood orange, and brioche balanced by a vibrant mineral freshness and a creamy mousse. It is a Pinot Noir dominated blend, sourced exclusively from Grands Crus vineyards that were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime. The wine has an alcohol content of 12.5% ABV and was disgorged in June 2024 with a dosage of 7 g/L. It is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window extends from 2025 through 2048.

Accolades

  • Wine Spectator - 97 points

  • James Suckling - 96 points

  • Vinous - 96 points

  • Jancis Robinson MW - 18/20 points

  • Wine Advocate - 94 points

Food Pairing

The vinous weight and structural grip of this champagne make it an exceptional partner for a wide variety of gastronomical dishes. It pairs brilliantly with fresh seafood such as oysters, grilled white fish, or lobster in a creamy butter sauce. Its full bodied character also complements savory main courses including roasted chicken with morels, tender lamb cutlets, or sweetbreads. For cheese courses, it is best suited to 18 month matured Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Comté, or truffled brie.

Vintage Quality

The 2018 vintage was a warm and generous year, characterized by a particularly hot and sunny summer that led to an early harvest starting in late August. Despite the heat, the fruit from Grand Cru chalky slopes retained high levels of acidity and low pH, resulting in a Churchill release that is noted for its surprising energy, vibrant freshness, and elegant, 'airy' structure.
