Springbank 1998 26 Year Old

Founded in 1828, Springbank is one of Scotland’s most traditional and revered distilleries, located in the historic whisky town of Campbeltown. Family-owned by J&A Mitchell, the distillery is celebrated for its hands-on approach, with all processes completed on site. This 1998 vintage reflects the distillery’s dedication to time-honoured craftsmanship and the distinctive maritime character of Campbeltown whiskies.

Whisky Description

Matured for 26 years, this Springbank was released in extremely limited numbers from two notable editions: a first-fill sherry butt bottled by Decadent Drinks for their Whiskyland Chapter One series, and a refill bourbon hogshead released in collaboration with the band Travis. Both showcase Springbank’s complex house style.
On the nose, the sherry-matured bottling reveals brass polish, orange peel, cedar, dried fruits, and sea spray, while the bourbon cask edition leans toward sandalwood, minerality, tobacco, and subtle peat. The palate delivers leathery depth, smoked meats, herbal liqueurs, and oily texture in the sherry version, contrasted by the elegant balance and refinement of the bourbon expression. Finishes are long and layered, with notes of cracked pepper, medicinal herbs, and gentle smoke. Bottled at natural cask strength 48.3%  ABV, these whiskies offer intensity, structure, and remarkable age balance.

Accolades

  • Words of Whisky – 94 points

  • Whiskybase – 91.75/100 average rating

Food Pairing

The richness and complexity of this whisky make it well suited to strong, flavourful pairings. Consider smoked venison, seared ribeye, or aged cheddar to complement its leathery and smoky depth. For the bourbon cask edition, roasted nuts, shellfish, or grilled lamb bring out its refined elegance. Together, these pairings create an unforgettable dining experience.
