Mauro Vannucci Piaggia Riserva 2021 - 1.5 Litre Bottle
This structured and 'classic' red wine originates from Italy, specifically from the heart of the Carmignano DOCG appellation in Tuscany. Piaggia was founded in the 1970s by Mauro Vannucci, whose daughter, Silvia Vannucci, now manages the estate with a philosophy focused on authenticity and minimal technological intervention. The vineyard, situated halfway between Florence and Pisa at an altitude of 250 metres, is planted on medium-textured clay and galestro soils that are steeped in history.
Wine Description
The 2021 Piaggia Riserva presents a deep, almost impenetrable ruby red colour. The sensory profile is highly aromatic, featuring a nose of dried violets, ripe cassis, and raspberries, embellished with elegant hints of tobacco, chocolate, and autumnal spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and 'velvety', showcasing a powerful structure where ripe red and black fruits are balanced by a core of mineral-inflected acidity. It is characterized by its dramatic depth and high-quality, 'edgy' tannins that suggest a long aging potential. The finish is long and concentrated, leaving a bitter blackberry resonance and a refreshing hint of blood orange. This blend typically consists of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and 10% Merlot. The wine reached an ABV of approximately 14.5% and was matured in French oak barriques for 18 months. Piaggia is a practicing organic winery that avoids herbicides and insecticides.
