Masseto 2022 - 1.5 Litre Bottle
Introduction
The Masseto 2022 is a red wine from Italy, specifically the Toscana region, in the subregion of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. Masseto is a single-estate wine, taking its name from the rock-hard clusters of 'massi' (blue clay) that characterize the unique vineyard. The estate, which is controlled by the Frescobaldi Family group, is celebrated globally for its uncompromising quality and obsession with a single vineyard. The winemaking philosophy is driven by the unique terroir—a blend of marine, alluvial, and volcanic soils with a vein of Pliocenic blue clay that governs the hydration of the vines, helping them survive dry spells. The first vintage was released in 1986, and the estate is known for producing what is considered the most prestigious Super Tuscan.
Wine Description
The wine is made from 100 percent Merlot. The colour is a vibrant, brilliant, powerful ruby with a slight purple tinge. The nose is pronounced and profound, expressing an immediate concentration of small red fruits. Aromatics include mineral notes of crushed dark stones and dissolved minerals, delicate peppery accents, black plum, red apples, lavender perfume, and sage. Other notes include cool, damp earth, dark hedgerow berries, Mediterranean scrub, cocoa, and wood. The palate is full-bodied, rich, and luscious, with good depth, velvety texture, and richness. It features bright cherry, succulent dark berries, and spice. The style is structured with ripe, firm, yet elegant tannins, and sensational freshness, achieving a perfect balance between strength and finesse. The finish is long and generous, with a touch of salinity and bitter herbs emerging. The wine undergoes rigorous ageing: 24 months in 100 percent new French oak barrels, followed by an additional 12 months in the bottle. The optimal drinking window is long, from 2028 through 2058. The Alcohol By Volume (ABV) is approximately 14.0 percent to 15 percent. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2012.
Food Pairing
The Masseto 2022, being a bold and structured red wine, is an excellent pairing for rich dishes. Suggested pairings include beef and venison. Its richness and concentration would also complement fine cuts of roasted lamb or mature, hard cheeses.
