Masi Amarone Costasera 2007

This prestigious red wine originates from the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG in the Veneto region of Italy. The story of the Boscaini family, the owners of Masi Agricola, began in 1772 with the purchase of their first vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. The winery's philosophy is defined by its unrivalled expertise in the 'appassimento' technique, a traditional method dating back to Roman times where grapes are dried on bamboo racks throughout the winter to concentrate aromas and flavours. Costasera refers to the 'evening slopes'—the west and south-west facing hillsides that overlook Lake Garda, where the reflected sunlight and mild climate provide ideal conditions for ripening Amarone grapes.

Wine Description

The Masi Costasera Amarone Classico 2007 presents a very dark, opaque ruby red colour with violet-tinged edges. The sensory profile is rich and powerful, featuring a complex bouquet of baked fruit, plums, and cherries, layered with notes of coffee, cocoa, vanilla, and anise. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and opulent, showcasing a dense, chewy texture with supple tannins and a balanced acidity that cuts through the natural sweetness of the dried fruit. It is characterized by its seamless integration of spicy flavours, such as cinnamon and clove, and a long-lasting finish that echoes ripe black cherry and mocha. This blend is composed of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara, and it has an ABV of 15%.

Vintage Quality

The 2007 vintage in Valpolicella is considered excellent, characterized by a hot and dry summer that allowed grapes to reach perfect phenolic ripeness with a very low incidence of mildew. These favourable conditions resulted in concentrated fruit with high sugar levels and balanced tannins, making it one of the most successful vintages for the region in recent decades. Winemakers noted that the dry autumn weather was particularly beneficial for the start of the appassimento process, ensuring the health and aromatic purity of the drying clusters.
