Markham Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Introduction

Markham Vineyards is a historic estate located in Napa Valley, California, and stands as the fourth oldest continuously operating winery in the county, having been founded in 1874. Originally established as Laurent Winery by Bordeaux immigrant Jean Laurent, the estate was purchased by Bruce Markham in 1977, who released his first Cabernet Sauvignon the following year. The winery is now part of Distinguished Vineyards & Wine Partners, maintaining a winemaking philosophy that emphasizes food friendliness and the sustainable expression of their 350 acres of estate vineyards across Calistoga, St. Helena, and Yountville.

Wine Description

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep ruby color and opens with inviting aromas of sweet hay, cherry, graphite, and warm baking spices. On the palate, the wine is lush and juicy, featuring ripe flavors of blackberry jam and cherry complemented by notes of cocoa, cedar, and tobacco leaf. It possesses a medium to full body with polished, chewy tannins that provide an elegant structure and lead into a long, flavorful finish marked by spice and graphite. This vintage is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged for over 27 months in French oak. While approachable now for its primary fruit, it has the density and weight to evolve beautifully through 2030.
