Livia Fontana Barolo "Fontanin" 2020
Livia Fontana Barolo "Fontanin" 2020 is an elegant and expressive red wine from the heart of the Langhe in Piedmont, Italy.
The Fontana family has deep roots in the region, having lived and worked in Castiglione Falletto for over 200 years. Managed today by Livia Fontana and her sons, Michele and Lorenzo, the winery follows a philosophy of "integrated pest management" and manual processing to ensure the wines are in harmony with the earth. The "Fontanin" bottling is a tribute to the family name and is crafted using grapes from two high-quality vineyard sites: Villero and Mariondino.
Wine Description
The 2020 vintage displays a deep red color with shades ranging from intense ruby to garnet. The nose is remarkably complex and seductive, featuring floral notes of macerated violet alongside balsamic nuances and spices such as licorice root and nutmeg. On the palate, the wine is clean and well-structured, showcasing the "decisive" backbone typical of Barolo. It is characterized by its fine, "dusty yet velvety" tannins and a refreshing liveliness contributed by the marbled sandstone and sandy soils of the vineyards.
The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, hand-harvested in mid-October. Following a gentle fermentation and long maceration in stainless steel, it is aged for approximately 32 to 40 months in traditional large oak barrels to refine its structure and "soul". This 2020 release has an ABV of 14% to 14.5% and is produced in limited quantities of fewer than 7,000 bottles per year.
