Le Serre Nuove Dell' Ornellaia 2021

Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2021 originates from Italy, within the Bolgheri subregion of Tuscany. The estate was established in 1981 in a beautiful and unspoiled area with a mission to produce world class wines through a philosophy of passion and dedication. This wine serves as the 'second vin' of the prestigious estate, crafted to offer an approachable yet distinctive perspective that foretells the personality of the flagship Ornellaia.

Wine Description

This wine displays a bright ruby red colour with characteristic purple highlights in the glass. The aromatic profile is refreshing and complex, featuring scents of pink pepper and cypress berries alongside notes of blackberry, blueberry, and subtle hints of leather and mint. On the palate, it is medium to full bodied and elegant, delivering flavours of dark cherry and blackcurrant balanced by a lovely acidity and velvety, fine grained tannins. The finish is enduring, savoury, and long lasting with a spicy final note. The varietal composition is 50% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 11% Petit Verdot. It has an ABV of 14.5% and is produced using sustainable development practices.

Food Pairing

The structured tannins and rich fruit profile of this red blend make it a versatile partner for many savoury dishes. Suggested pairings include roasted or barbecued lamb, duck breast, and grilled red meats such as steak or beef burgers topped with hard cheese. It also complements traditional Italian fare like lasagna or meat stews and pairs effectively with mature, full flavoured cheeses.

Vintage Quality

The 2021 vintage in Bolgheri is regarded as high calibre, starting with a mild but rainy winter that successfully replenished soil water resources. A dry summer followed, but the estate's deep soils allowed the vines to avoid intense water stress, resulting in small, highly concentrated grapes. The winemaker's skill in managing these dry conditions and utilizing a precise harvest in September ensured that the quality potential of each vineyard block was fully conveyed.

Accolades

95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck: "This is one of the great vintages for this cuvée and would be a wine for lovers of Bordeaux. The 2021 Le Serre Nuove Dell'Ornellaia sports a saturated red hue and opens to a great layered and harmonious nose, with aromas of kirsch, leather, fresh Mediterranean herbs, and crushed flowers that all resonate together with wonderful purity and depth. It’s open and generous on the palate, with refined, polished tannins, outstanding length, and refreshing acidity that’s seamlessly woven into the wine. Boy, is this hard to resist now and is a truly stunning wine from recently departed winemaker Olga Fusari. Bravo. Stash as much of this as you can away – it’s one for the ages. A great feather in the cap for Axel Heinz as well, it can only increase anticipation of the house’s top label for next year. Bravo tutti."
