Louis Latour Batard Montrachet Grand Cru 'Clos Poirier' 2023
This prestigious white wine originates from France, within the legendary Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru appellation situated between the picturesque villages of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. Founded in 1797, Maison Louis Latour is one of Burgundy’s most historic and revered family run houses, now managed by the eleventh generation of the family. The 'Clos Poirier' is a single, distinct parcel of 0.85 hectares positioned directly below the iconic Montrachet vineyard. It is easily recognizable as the only plot in this specific vineyard site with north-south facing vines, of which Maison Louis Latour owns and meticulously works the eastern 0.43 hectare portion to produce a white wine of maximum pedigree and terroir expression.
Wine Description
The 2023 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru Clos Poirier exhibits a brilliant, pale yellow golden colour in the glass. On the nose, it offers an intense and complex bouquet characterized by aromas of toasted hazelnut, vanilla, and coconut, accompanied by ripe apple, melon, and hints of sweet spice. The palate is full, opulent, and fleshy, showing a rich, creamy, and slightly fat texture balanced beautifully by a lively and vibrant acidity. Flavours of white peach, pineapple, and lemongrass unfold across the mid palate, transitioning into a long, focused, and racy finish marked by fresh almond, toasted oak, and a flinty, energized minerality. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay, the grapes were pressed slowly as whole clusters, traditional fermentation concluded in oak casks, and the wine was aged for 8 to 10 months in 100% new French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage. This powerful Grand Cru is drinking beautifully now but possesses an optimal cellaring and drinking window of 10 to 15 years.
Vintage Quality
The 2023 vintage in the Côte de Beaune required careful management to navigate a warm summer and high potential yields. Ultimately, the season delivered beautifully ripe Chardonnay fruit that maintained excellent structural balance, allowing winemakers to craft white Burgundies defined by open, generous fruit profiles, underlying mineral drive, and superb aromatic clarity.
