L'Arack De Musar - 500 ml

Introduction

L'Arack de Musar is a premium artisanal spirit from Lebanon, produced by the world-renowned Chateau Musar winery in the Bekaa Valley. Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in a 17th-century Mzar castle in Ghazir, the winery is globally recognized for its dedication to tradition and quality under the long-standing leadership of the Hochar family. This arack is a masterful expression of Lebanese heritage, crafted from grape alcohol with an average age of five years before undergoing a meticulous four-fold distillation process.

Spirit Description

This arack is distinguished by its purity and sophistication, achieved through four distillations—one more than the traditional three used for most Lebanese aracks. During the final distillation, fragrant local anise seeds are added to the grape spirit. Following distillation, the spirit is matured for one year in traditional terracotta amphorae, which facilitates the sedimentation of solid matter while enriching the liquid with unique liquorice notes.

  • Colour: In its pure state, the spirit is crystal clear; however, it displays a mesmerizing cloudy or milky white appearance when water is added.

  • Aroma: The nose is intense and clean, dominated by powerful aromas of star anise, fennel, and fresh liquorice strap, with subtle hints of crushed eucalyptus.

  • Palate: It reveals a silky, smooth, and surprisingly sweet texture despite being a dry spirit. Flavours are concentrated and juicy, featuring deep notes of aniseed and liquorice.

  • Body: The spirit is medium-bodied with a slightly glycerous, velvety mouthfeel.

  • Finish: It concludes with an exceptionally long, clean, and dry finish characterized by a lingering warmth and a persistent aftertaste of liquorice.

  • ABV: This spirit is bottled at a formidable 53%.

Food Pairing

As a traditional Lebanese spirit, L'Arack de Musar is a versatile companion for both appetizers and post-meal courses.

  • Savoury: It is the classic match for traditional Lebanese mezze, including hummus, baba ghannouj, tabbouleh, and grilled halloumi. Its herbal profile also pairs excellently with barbecued lamb skewers, grilled eggplant, and spicy goat cheese dips like shankleesh.

  • Dessert: The spirit can be used to flavour jellies or sorbets and complements fruit-based desserts.

  • Serving: While traditionally served by 'breaking' the arack—adding one-third arack to two-thirds water over ice—the extra distillation allows this particular version to be enjoyed neat as a smooth digestif.
