Laphroaig Elements 2.0
Introduction
Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is a limited edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the country of Scotland, specifically the Islay region. The Laphroaig Distillery was established in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, becoming one of the three Kildalton Distilleries on the island's south coast. The distillery is renowned for using its own malting floor and peaty water from the Kilbride Stream, contributing to its signature smoky, medicinal flavour. The 'Elements' series is an exploratory line that challenges the boundaries of whisky making by focusing on how different aspects of production can engineer unique flavours.
Spirit Description
Elements 2.0 is a cask-strength, non-chill filtered whisky that was distilled during a particularly frosty January. The whisky's defining feature is its extended fermentation process of up to 115 hours, significantly longer than the standard 55 hours. This longer fermentation encourages a secondary fermentation that introduces extra tropical and fruity notes, which perfectly balance the spirit's classic peaty character. The colour is a bold, pale gold. The nose is fruity and subtly coastal, with aromas of stewed apples, vanilla custard, and zesty orange peel alongside subtle peaty notes. The palate is fruity, sweet, and salty, delivering flavours of green apples, runny honey, cream soda, and soft peatiness reminiscent of a smouldering bonfire and smoked seafood. The finish is long and sweet, with an increasingly warming smokiness that 'leaves smokiness sitting like a blanket'. It is bottled at a cask strength of 59.6% ABV.
Accolades
This expression has received significant recognition, showcasing the success of the distillery's experimentation. Laphroaig Elements 2.0 was awarded 'Whisky of the Year 2024' by Whisky Advocate, a leading North American whisky magazine. This high rating recognises the uncompromising craftsmanship that went into creating the spirit.
Food Pairing
The intense smoky, fruity, and coastal character of this single malt makes it a suitable partner for bold flavours.
Its fruity richness and coastal dimension make it a perfect companion for smoked seafood, raw oysters, or smoked salmon.
The smoky notes pair well with rich meats such as steak or with barbecue-style dishes.
The sweet and fruity aspects are complemented by desserts like apple-based sweets or very dark chocolate, which often pairs well with peaty whiskies.
The cask strength is powerful, so it is best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to reveal its full aromatic complexity.
