Labruyere Moulin a Vent Le Carquelin 2022

Introduction

This exceptional red wine comes from France, specifically the Beaujolais region and the Cru appellation of Moulin-à-Vent. 'Le Carquelin' is a single-parcel selection (sélection parcellaire) from Domaine Labruyère, one of the oldest wineries in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. The estate was established in 1850 by Jean-Marie Labruyère in the hamlet of Les Thorins. Since 2008, Edouard Labruyère has imbued the estate with a new dynamic, convinced that their plots are located on the best terroirs of the region, and the Domaine is today considered a spearhead of the Beaujolais region. Domaine Labruyère is also under the same ownership as Domaine Jacques Prieur in Meursault on the Côte de Beaune.

Wine Description

The wine presents a beautiful, intense ruby colour with purple reflections. The aroma is fresh, discreet, and saline, with a touch of rose and juicy red cherry. With time, the nose opens up with more intensity and an interesting hint of sapidity, revealing crunchy wild berries, a 'foxy' touch, and undergrowth. Other reviewers note aromas of mulberries, violets, cloves, and purple plums.

The wine is 100% Gamay. It is medium-bodied, cool, and juicy on the palate. Notes include cherry, blackberry, and wild strawberry, or black fruit, cocoa, dark chocolate, and liquorice. It is also described as fresh and fruity, silky and floral, or having a velvety, silky mouthfeel with excellent balance and freshness. The tannins are supple, refreshing, and digestible, or saline and persistent, but measured. The finish is persistent until the end, often showing a note of leather, blackberry skin, and undergrowth. The optimal drinking window is now up to 2029, and it can also repay ageing.

The single-parcel 'Le Carquelin' spans 1.75 hectares. The terroir features a light, sandy clay and acid soil that is poor in organic matter and presents the typical pink colour of the Cru. The subsoil is highly altered granite. The 50-year-old vines (on average) are hand-harvested and 100% destemmed. The wine is aged partly in demi-muids and the rest in 228 L oak barrels for 12 months, followed by 6 months in a concrete vat.
