Gut Oggau Emmeram 2024

Introduction

This white wine originates from Austria, specifically from the Burgenland region. Established in 2007 by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck, Gut Oggau is a pioneer in the natural wine movement, working with a 13-hectare estate that has not seen chemical treatments for over 20 years. The winery's philosophy centres on a fictional family tree where each wine is given a name and a face that represents its unique personality; Emmeram is characterized as the globetrotting, sophisticated 'son' or 'uncle' figure with a captivating and playful charm.

Wine Description

Gut Oggau Emmeram displays a cloudy, golden appearance and is often noted for a very light, natural fizz. The nose is powerful and exuberant, offering aromas of lychee, rose petals, and gardenia layered with citrus zest, honey, and tropical fruits like passionfruit and papaya. On the palate, the wine is medium to full bodied and bone dry, delivering a succulent core of pear and apricot balanced by bright acidity and a satisfying 'wet stone' minerality. It is characterized by its intense aromatic complexity and a direct, energetic structure that avoids the heaviness often associated with its variety. This 100% Gewürztraminer is produced from 40-year-old vines grown on limestone and sand soils, with an ABV typically ranging between 12.5% and 13.7%. The wine is fully biodynamic (Demeter certified), fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral oak barrels, and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulphur. The optimal drinking window is from release through five to seven years.
