Gerard Raphet Bourgogne Rouge 2023
Introduction
This red wine originates from France, specifically from the Burgundy region within the regional Bourgogne AOC appellation. Established in the 1920s, Domaine Gérard Raphet is a historic family winery based in Morey Saint Denis that is currently led by fourth generation winemaker Gérard Raphet and his daughter, Marion. The winery's philosophy is rooted in traditional, handmade production from field to bottle, utilizing exceptionally old vines—many surpassing 100 years of age—to create soulful wines that emphasize purity and the unique limestone terroir of the Côte de Nuits.
Wine Description
Gérard Raphet Bourgogne Rouge 2023 displays a delicate ruby or light raspberry red colour in the glass. The nose is aromatic and expressive, offering scents of fresh picked red cherries, strawberries, and autumn leaves layered with notes of cinnamon, blood orange, and a subtle forest floor earthiness. On the palate, the wine is light to medium bodied and fresh, delivering vibrant flavours of raspberry, pomegranate jam, and red currant supported by soft, well incorporated tannins and a brilliant acidity. It is characterized by its elegant perfume, 'see-through' clarity, and a slightly rustic finish marked by delicate bitter pit fruit and mineral undertones. This 100% Pinot Noir typically features an ABV of 13% and is produced from 40 year old vines located in the 'Les Grands Champs' lieu-dit of Gevrey Chambertin. The wine is fermented on indigenous yeasts and aged for 18 months in older French oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. While the winery employs sustainable (lutte raisonnée) farming practices that prioritize organic methods, the wine is not formally certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from release through five to seven years.

Food Pairing
The vibrant acidity and delicate fruit profile of this Bourgogne Rouge make it a versatile companion for lighter meats and earthy vegetarian dishes. It pairs perfectly with roast pork or chicken, as well as poultry like turkey or pheasant served with a traditional bread sauce. Its herbal and spicy notes also complement porcini mushroom crostini, beef in oyster sauce, and delicately spiced Mediterranean fare.
Vintage Quality
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy is regarded as a high quality and abundant year, offering 'Burgundian' transparency and a return to a more classic, fresh style compared to recent warmer years. A relatively cool and wet summer followed by a harvest heatwave resulted in Pinot Noir with perfectly ripe fruit on the palate balanced by a satisfying, invigorating freshness and gentle tannins.
