Dugat Py Monthelie Les Riottes Premier Cru 2023
This rare and powerful red wine originates from the Monthélie Premier Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. While Monthélie is often overshadowed by its neighbors, Volnay and Meursault, Domaine Dugat-Py treats this terroir with the same "Grand Cru" intensity as their legendary Gevrey-Chambertin holdings. The winery's philosophy is defined by Loïc Dugat’s commitment to very old vines, some over 100 years old, and rigorous organic and biodynamic farming to achieve the "quintessence of each terroir".
Wine Description
The Dugat-Py Monthélie Premier Cru Les Riottes presents a deep, saturated ruby colour. The sensory profile is notably more concentrated and darker-fruited than typical Monthélie, featuring an intense nose of blackcurrants, wild cherries, and pomegranate, layered with sophisticated notes of turned earth, exotic five-spice, and a touch of smokiness. On the palate, the wine is dense and structured, showcasing a "firm but really smooth" tannic frame and a refreshing mineral core. It is characterized by its remarkable depth and aging potential, leading to a long, persistent finish with hints of salted caramel and dark chocolate. This 100% Pinot Noir is crafted from low-yielding old vines, fermented with a portion of whole bunches, and aged for 16–18 months in French oak barrels (typically around 60% new for the Premier Crus).
