Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose 2024

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 2024 is widely regarded as the global benchmark for serious, age-worthy rosé, produced in the Bandol appellation of Provence, France.

The estate’s history dates back to 1834, but its modern reputation was forged by Lucie 'Lulu' Tempier and Lucien Peyraud, who married in 1936 and dedicated their lives to establishing Mourvèdre as the premier grape of the region. Managed today with the same pioneering spirit, the winery operates with a philosophy of deep respect for nature, utilizing organic and biodynamic practices that follow lunar cycles. Tempier is unique for producing a rosé with the structure of a fine white wine, designed to evolve in complexity over several years in the bottle.

Wine Description

The 2024 vintage presents a pale salmon pink colour and a remarkably fragrant nose of raspberries, apples, and steely minerals. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and luscious with a mouth-coating texture, balanced by high acidity and a slight effervescence. Sensory notes include red berries, apple peel, and bitter citrus rinds resembling grapefruit or orange, leading to a long finish defined by grapefruit and intense mineral drive.

This wine is a blend of approximately 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, and 20% Cinsault, though some parcels may include small amounts of Carignan. The Mourvèdre provides the wine with its signature character, balance, and aging potential. The grapes are hand-harvested from vines averaging 20 years of age and undergo cold pellicular maceration and direct pressing before fermenting with indigenous yeasts. The 2024 release has an ABV of 13% and is certified organic.

Accolades

  • 94 Vinous: "The 2024 Bandol Rosé from Domaine Tempier is utter class. Flaunting its trademark perfume of grapefruit peel, savory herbs, white flowers and sea spray, the Tempier Rosé shines in a league of its own. The mineral intensity and concentration through the mid-palate is really on another level in 2024. Supreme balance and textural finesse are the orders of the day. This is wine I consider a must-buy every year, but the 2024 is easily the best edition of Tempier Rosé in recent memory. Best of all, it will easily age for years."

Food Pairing

This gastronomically expressive rosé is highly versatile, pairing exceptionally well with Mediterranean and Provençal cuisine. It is a delightful match for grilled seafood such as prawns, octopus, or red mullet, as well as classic dishes like ratatouille or salade niçoise. Its structured profile also allows it to harmonize with poultry, particularly roasted chicken seasoned with herbs de Provence, and tangy cheeses like goat cheese.

Vintage Quality

The 2024 vintage in Provence was a year of resilience, beginning with exceptionally heavy rainfall in March that replenished deep water reservoirs. While coastal vineyards like those in Bandol were protected by the warmth of the Mediterranean, the region faced challenges from spring frosts in mid-April and localized hail in May. A hot, sunny summer followed, with a heatwave in mid-August that required rapid harvesting to preserve acidity. The resulting wines are characterized by excellent aromatic freshness and a good concentration of body.
