Domaine Dujac Echezeaux Grand Cru 2023
Introduction
This revered red wine comes from France, specifically the Burgundy region, in the Côte de Nuits subregion, from the Échezeaux Grand Cru appellation in Flagey-Échezeaux. Domaine Dujac was founded in 1968 by Jacques Seysses, who purchased Domaine Graillet and renamed it, with his wife Rosalind joining in 1973. The estate is celebrated for its commitment to responsible vineyard techniques, including the use of organic and biodynamic practices, and for its pioneering use of whole cluster fermentation, which contributes to the wine's characteristic delicacy and complex structure. The Dujac family, now led by the second generation (Jeremy, Diana, and Alec Seysses), has expanded the estate while maintaining its focus on expressing the unique terroir.
Wine Description
The 2023 Échezeaux Grand Cru displays a beautiful vivid ruby purple colour. It is a powerful and expressive wine, offering aromas of smoked plums, smoked duck, spices, orange zest, huckleberry, fig jam, cranberry, cocoa, and rose petals. It is made from 100% Pinot Noir. On the palate, it is described as full-bodied, broad, and fleshy, with a silky red fruit profile, refined, fine-grained tannins, and a keen line of acidity. The wine is layered and concentrated, finishing with a long, very serious, and saline finish. It is fermented using a high proportion of whole clusters (up to almost 100%) and aged in oak barrels with a significant proportion of new wood for 14 to 18 months, which helps refine the tannins. The vineyard is certified organic.
