Contino Gran Reserva 2018

Viñedos del Contino, established in 1973, was a groundbreaking winery in Rioja, introducing the 'château concept'—a significant departure from tradition as the first single-estate winery committed to expressing a unique site. The estate is surrounded by 62 hectares of vineyards from which all its wines are sourced. The history of the property dates back to the 16th century, reflected in the winery’s name, which refers to the 'contino', an officer of the royal family's guard.

Wine Description

On the nose, it is described as opulent, intense, and very complex, with aromas of black and red fruits well integrated with toasted notes. Specific aromatic notes include purple plum, mocha, violet, clove, mint leaf, dark chocolate, cherry, chocolate, sandalwood, incense, and mushroom. The palate is polished and powerful, but well-balanced with silky tannins. Flavours of blackberry and black cherry are present. The wine exhibits a medium body and a chalky, long, and persistent finish that carries balsamic and fruity notes.

Accolades

  • 'James Suckling - 98 points'

  • 'Robert Parker The Wine Advocate - 95 points'

  • 'Vinous - 96 points'

  • 'Wine Enthusiast - 96 points'
