Colome Malbec 'Autentico' 2023

Introduction

The Colome 'Autentico' is a red wine from Argentina, specifically the Calchaquí Valleys in the Salta region. Bodega Colome is the oldest working winery in Argentina, originally opened in 1831. The winery pays tribute to its pioneers who planted the original vineyards, and the fruit for 'Autentico' comes from their best single vineyard at 2,300 metres above sea level. This high altitude, combined with a large diurnal temperature swing, is key to the winemaking philosophy, as it produces grapes with thicker, darker skins and helps retain a natural, fresh acidity. The winery uses sustainable farming practices to achieve the 'authentic' expression of the terroir.

Wine Description

The wine is a pure, unoaked, single-vineyard expression of 100 percent Malbec. It is made in an old winemaking style using ancient techniques such as pigeage (punch down) and has no oak influence to retain freshness and purity of fruit. The wine is intense in colour, often displaying violet hues. It offers a complex bouquet of aromas like red cherries, blackberries, and figs, intertwined with notes of clove, elegant spice, and minerals. The palate is crisp and robust with concentrated, ripe, round tannins and a very good, lively acidity that provides structure and balance. The style is full-bodied and concentrated, with a long-lasting, pure fruit finish. The wine is aged for 10 months in tank and concrete egg, followed by 10 months in bottle. The Alcohol By Volume (ABV) is 14.5 percent. Bodega Colome's vineyards use sustainable farming practices.
