Checkmate Fool's Mate Chardonnay 2021

This sophisticated and textured white wine originates from Canada, specifically from the premier Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Established in 2013 by Anthony von Mandl, CheckMate Artisanal Winery was created with the "outrageous dream" of producing world-class Chardonnay and Merlot in the high-altitude, glacial-fed landscapes of the Okanagan. The name "Fool's Mate" refers to the quickest possible checkmate in chess, symbolizing a bold and decisive move; it is the winery’s only multi-vineyard Chardonnay, meticulously blended from five distinct estate sites across the Golden Mile Bench, Black Sage Bench, and Osoyoos East Bench.

Wine Description

CheckMate Fool's Mate Chardonnay 2021 presents a complex and inviting sensory profile. The nose is highly aromatic, featuring notes of brioche, Meyer lemon, orange blossoms, and flint, layered with hints of Asian pear and peach. On the palate, the wine has a rich, "voluptuous" entry with flavours of crème fraîche, nectarine, and freshly baked bread. It is characterized by a "tension" across the mid-palate and a long, marine sea-salt finish that reflects its mineral-driven undercurrent. This wine typically reaches an ABV of 13.6% to 14.3%. To achieve its signature texture, the 2021 vintage was matured for 16 months in a sophisticated mix of French oak barriques (42% to 68% new), large foudres, and concrete eggs. Notably, the estate vineyards achieved organic certification in 2021.
