Chateau Quintus 2016
Introduction
Château Quintus 2016 is a red wine from France, produced in the Bordeaux region and the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé appellation. The estate is owned by Domaine Clarence Dillon, the family behind the First Growth Château Haut-Brion. The 2016 vintage is particularly significant as it marked the sixth vintage under the Haut-Brion team's umbrella, solidifying its reputation for achieving great depth and focus. Critics widely regard the 2016 as a major success, showing depth never before achieved by the estate at the time.
Wine Description
The wine has a quite deep garnet-red or deep garnet-purple colour. The aromatic profile is complex and layered, with a quiet intensity of ripe dark fruits like plum preserves, blueberry pie, and mulberries. These are beautifully integrated with notes of tar, star anise, chocolate-covered cherries, dried lavender, and potpourri.
Varietal Composition: 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. This was the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc since the debut 2011 vintage, lending impressive backbone.
Body and Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with a silky, caressing attack. The palate is plush, generous, and expressive, framed by beautifully ripe, soft tannins and a lively, fresh backbone.
Structure: The mid-palate is fleshy and tight, showing a concentrated, mineral, and almost graphite-like core. The elegance and freshness prevent the generous 15% alcohol from overwhelming the wine.
Aging: Aged in French oak barrels (approximately 35% new oak).
ABV: 15%.
Optimal Drinking Window: Long-term aging potential, typically from 2023–2027 through 2040–2050.
Accolades
The 2016 vintage is considered one of the estate's finest releases to date.
James Suckling - 97 points
Jeb Dunnuck - 95 points
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 94 points
Decanter (Jane Anson) - 94 points
Food Pairing
This powerful and balanced Saint-Émilion pairs wonderfully with all classic meat dishes. Suggested pairings include:
Beef, duck, and lamb.
Roasted, braised, and grilled dishes.
Vintage Quality
The 2016 vintage in Saint-Émilion was highly successful. A summer drought was broken by beneficial rains in mid-September, allowing for an optimal end to the maturity cycle. The combination of warm days and cool nights in October resulted in wines rich in colour, structure, and intense fruit, while retaining excellent freshness.
