Chateau Palmer 2002

Introduction

Chateau Palmer 2002 is a red wine from the Margaux appellation in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France. Originally part of the ancient Chateau d'Issan estate, it achieved Third Growth status in the 1855 Classification and has since been recognized as a 'Super Second' due to its consistent performance. The estate is managed by the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families, who emphasize a winemaking philosophy that prioritizes the expression of terroir through a unique blend that typically features a higher proportion of Merlot than its Left Bank neighbours.

Wine Description

In the glass, this wine exhibits a remarkable, opaque purple colour. The complex sensory profile is characterized by stunning aromatics of menthol, blackcurrants, plums, and licorice, with subtle hints of cappuccino, acacia flowers, and espresso. On the palate, it is dense, medium to full-bodied, and powerful, displaying a fleshy structure and a velvet middle palate. Flavours of ripe damson, blackberry, and raspberry fruit are balanced by a skip of acidity and impressive levels of tannin. The finish is long and fresh, showing notes of white pepper, gunsmoke, and cigar box. This blend is composed of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot, with an ABV of approximately 13%. While the estate transitioned to 100% biodynamic farming by 2014, the 2002 vintage was produced using traditional methods. The optimal drinking window is anticipated to last until 2028.

Vintage Quality

The 2002 vintage was initially threatened by a gloomy, cool summer, but was saved by an 'Indian summer' in September that brought magnificent dry and sunny weather. These late conditions allowed for a high concentration of sugar and phenolic compounds, particularly in Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, though Merlot yields were significantly reduced due to uneven flowering. Despite a violent hailstorm on September 20, Chateau Palmer avoided the heaviest rains and produced one of its boldest and most concentrated wines since the 1960s.
