Chateau Margaux 1998

Hailing from the historic Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, France, this first growth ('Premier Cru Classé') is a quintessential expression of its unique gravelly terroir. Since the late 1970s, the estate has flourished under the ownership of the Mentzelopoulos family, with Corinne Mentzelopoulos continuing her father André's legacy of meticulous quality control and innovation. The winery's philosophy is rooted in a five-hundred-year tradition of craftsmanship, emphasizing finesse and complexity above all else.

Wine Description

In the glass, the 1998 vintage displays a dense ruby-purple colour, now evolving into a mature garnet with slight amber tones at the rim. The bouquet is remarkably fresh and complex, offering primary red berry fruit and blackcurrant alongside secondary notes of vanilla, roasted coffee beans, and dried rose petals. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet elegant, featuring a medium body with firm, 'fat' tannins that have become polished and silky over time. Flavours of black cherry, cassis, and spice are complemented by subtle undercurrents of cedar, tobacco, and forest floor. This blend consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Now at peak maturity, it offers a sophisticated drinking window that remains open through 2035-2040.
