Casanova Di Neri Brunello 'Giovanni Neri' 2021

This prestigious and 'intellectual' red wine originates from Italy, within the world-renowned Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation in Tuscany. Founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, the estate is now managed by his son Giacomo and grandsons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo. The 'Giovanni Neri' bottling is the estate's newest flagship, created as a tribute to the founder and sourced from a unique vineyard in the Sesta zone with vines that are over 50 years old. The winery's philosophy focuses on a 'modern' yet terroir-driven approach, utilizing a gravity-fed cellar built into a hillside to ensure natural humidity and temperature control.

Wine Description

The 2021 Casanova di Neri Giovanni Neri presents a bright, brilliant, and intense red colour. Its sensory profile is a complex 'symphony' of high-toned aromatics, featuring a nose of dark cherries, blueberries, and plums, layered with scents of blood orange, wild strawberry, mint, and sandalwood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and muscular yet remarkably elegant, showcasing tactile mineral tones and fine-grained, creamy tannins. It is characterized by its vertical structure and a vibrant, chiseled finish that is both deep and persistent. This 100% Sangiovese was vinified with 20% whole clusters and reached an alcohol content (ABV) of 14.5%. The wine was aged for 30 months in barrel followed by 18 months in the bottle, and while the estate follows rigorous and low-impact grape-growing, this bottling is not officially certified organic.

Accolades

James Suckling 98 Points - " A muscular single-vineyard Brunello. Intense aromas of dark cherries, spearmint, lilacs and sandalwood. Full-bodied with a tight and compacted palate, chewy tannins and a fresh and tense finish. Needs time to soften and come together. Best after 2028."

Vintage Quality

The 2021 vintage in Montalcino is hailed as a potential 'modern classic', awarded a five-star rating for its exceptional harmony and precision. Despite a severe April frost that significantly reduced yields across the region, a remarkably even growing season with warm but not excessive summer heat allowed for optimal phenolic complexity. Winemakers at Casanova di Neri benefited from late August showers that refreshed the vines, resulting in fruit with a 'nervy energy' and perfectly integrated acidity that ensures a longevity of 15 to 25 years.
