La Fiole du Pape Chateauneuf du Pape
Introduction
La Fiole du Pape is a non-vintage red blend from the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France. First created in 1952 by Charles Brotte, it is renowned for its distinctive 'twisted' bottle design, which represents a gnarled vine struggling against the Mistral wind. The winery's philosophy is inspired by the Champagne region; by blending several vintages—including reserve wines aged up to 10 years—they ensure a consistent house style and a wine that offers a 'perfectly aged' character immediately upon release.
Wine Description
This wine displays a deep and bright ruby red colour. The aromatic profile is open and powerful, featuring scents of ripe berries, morello cherry, and warm spices like cinnamon and clove, alongside complex undertones of truffles and cedar. On the palate, it is elegant and well-balanced, offering a fleshy and powerful texture with flavours of prunes, liquorice, and roasted game. The wine is primarily composed of Grenache (70%), which provides fruit and sweetness, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault for freshness, tannins, and structure. It finishes with a long, persistent impression of fruit and spice. While intended for immediate enjoyment, it maintains a cellar aging potential of approximately 3 to 5 years.
