Borgogno Grappa di Barolo

Introduction

Borgogno Grappa di Barolo is a premium artisanal spirit from Italy, specifically produced in the Piedmont region within the village of Barolo. The winery, Giacomo Borgogno & Figli, was founded in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno and is recognized as the oldest continuously operating winery in the Barolo area. After being managed by the Borgogno family for five generations, the estate was acquired in 2008 by the Farinetti family, who remain dedicated to maintaining the distillery's historical traditions and classic style.

Spirit Description

This grappa is crafted exclusively from the fermented pomace of Nebbiolo grapes used in the production of Barolo wine. It is distilled using a discontinuous cycle in small steam powered copper boilers and is aged in wooden barrels for approximately 24 months.

  • Colour: The spirit presents a bright pale yellow or straw yellow colour with golden reflections.

  • Aroma: The nose is delightful and layered, featuring fresh floral notes of flowers and ripe grapes alongside delicate scents of pear, green apple, and soft spices.

  • Palate: It offers a rich, fresh, and elegant palate with a silky and well rounded texture. The grape flavours are echoed in the mouth, accompanied by harmonious woody notes.

  • Body: The spirit is characterized by an intense and persistent structure that remains balanced and velvety.

  • Finish: It concludes with a pleasant hint of spice on the finish, showing a persistent and clean aftertaste.

  • ABV: Borgogno Grappa di Barolo is bottled at 43% alcohol by volume.

Accolades

Borgogno Grappa di Barolo has received notable recognition for its quality and craftsmanship in international spirits competitions.

  • Silver Medal: Awarded at the USA Spirits Ratings in 2024 for its silky and well rounded profile.

  • 90 Points: Rated by Gilbert & Gaillard in January 2024, praised for its delightful floral nose and elegant palate.

  • Cultural Standing: The winery's heritage is deeply linked to Italian history; its Barolo was famously used for the toast at the celebratory lunch for the Unification of Italy in 1861.

Food Pairing

The intense structure and persistent floral notes of this grappa make it a versatile partner for rich and savoury culinary experiences.

  • Savoury: It is traditionally proposed at the end of a meal as a digestif to help cleanse the palate.

  • Cheese: Aged Italian cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Gorgonzola, or Castelmagno provide a creamy contrast to the spirit's woody notes.

  • Dessert: Its spicy and fruity profile pairs excellently with dark chocolate, hazelnut based pastries, or traditional Italian tarts.

  • Serving: For the best sensory experience, it is recommended to serve this grappa at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C in a large tulip shaped glass.
