Borgogno Barolo Riserva 2017
Introduction
Borgogno Barolo Riserva 2017 is a red wine from Italy, produced in the Piedmont region and the Barolo D.O.C.G. appellation. Borgogno is one of the most historic Barolo producers, with a classic style and a history that dates back to 1861. The Riserva is a selection of the best grapes from the winery's most important Crus: Cannubi, Liste, and Fossati, which are three single vineyards in the Barolo district. The Farinetti family currently owns the estate, with Andrea Farinetti leading the winemaking direction.
Wine Description
The wine has an intense ruby red colour with luminous garnet hues. The nose is alluring and profound, offering attractive floral notes of dried red fruits, rose hips, dried rose petals, and forest berry. Further complexity includes sweet spices, cinnamon, licorice, walnuts, balsamic herbs, tarry smoke, and crushed stones.
The blend is 100% Nebbiolo. The wine is full bodied and robust. The palate is velvety, warm, powerful, concentrated, and vigorous, with sour cherry and cranberry flavours framed by firm tannins and racy acidity. It is layered and broad, with fine tannins that are firm and vibrant at the same time. It is aged for six years in large barrels of Slavonian oak, followed by six months of ageing in the bottle before release. Stylistically, it is a fine tuned, spicy, youthfully austere, and elegant wine that is destined for long ageing. The ABV is 14.5%. It is already approachable, but even better after four to five years and onward, with a longevity of over 15 years. Information on the organic status of the wine is not available in the sources.

Food Pairing
This wine is an ideal pairing for red meat main courses, important first courses, meat main courses, and aged cheeses. It is also a perfect companion for stews with red meat, game, mature hard cheeses, or truffle dishes.
Vintage Quality
The 2017 vintage for Piedmont was considered difficult. The winter was unusually warm and dry with no snow, which caused an early budbreak. The vintage is described as having produced a deep, tumultuous, and incisive wine.
