Benrinnes 11 Year Old 'A Tale of Two Banffs' Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 700 ml

A Tale of Two Banffs is a highly limited, single-cask release of Benrinnes 11 Year Old single malt scotch whisky. This expression was created as a collaboration between Cask 88 and the Banff Whisky Experience to celebrate the historic connection between the distillery’s home in Banffshire, Scotland, and its namesake town of Banff, Alberta, Canada. It is a "survivor" story of sorts, utilizing a heavy, "meaty" Speyside distillate and finishing it in high-intensity wood to create a profile that can stand up to the rugged landscape of the Canadian Rockies.

Spirit Description

This 11-year-old single malt underwent a specific two-stage maturation process: it was aged for 9 years in ex-bourbon casks before being finished for its final 2 years in Oloroso Sherry Octave casks. Octave casks, being much smaller than standard butts, provide a significantly higher surface-area-to-liquid ratio, leading to a rapid and intense flavor extraction.

  • Nose: It opens with a distinct red wine and ethanol punch, which quickly settles into a playful aroma of Juicy Fruit gum, citrus zest, and a hint of vanilla.

  • Palate: Surprisingly dry and tannic given the sherry finish. It features a "tannic tug" on the sides of the tongue, with nuanced notes of bold fruits and a subtle, meaty spice characteristic of the Benrinnes distillate.

  • Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving. The oak spice finally takes center stage, bringing a slight tropical sweetness and a lingering warmth. It is bottled at a powerful cask strength of 57% ABV (though some batches vary slightly to 56%) and is non-chill filtered with no added color.

Accolades & Exclusivity

  • Ultra-Limited Outturn: Only 230 bottles were produced worldwide, making it a highly sought-after collector's item in both Scotland and Alberta.

  • Community Recognition: Widely celebrated within the Alberta whisky community (notably by Craft Cellars and Whisky Drop) as a premier example of "terroir-bridging" storytelling.

  • Cask 88 Heritage: Bottled by Cask 88, a family-owned independent bottler renowned for their expertise in rare and single-cask scotch.
