Arran Signature Series 3 – Duero Discovery Single Malt Scotch Whisky

1. Introduction

This single malt Scotch whisky originates from Scotland, specifically the Island region on the Isle of Arran. The Lochranza Distillery, the home of Arran Single Malt, was founded in 1993, with production beginning in 1995. The distillery is situated near Loch na Davie, which provides a clean and pure source of fresh water for distillation. This expression is the third bottling in the 'Signature Series,' hand-selected and signed by Distillery Manager Stewart Bowman.

Spirit Description

The 'Duero Discovery' is a 12-year-old, unpeated single malt with a rich, ruby amber colour. It was initially matured for six years in first- and second-fill bourbon barrels, followed by a further six years of finishing in first-fill Spanish red wine casks sourced from the Duero River region.

  • Aroma: The nose is bright with caramelised fruit and hazelnuts. There are also notes of salted caramel and zesty grapefruit rind.

  • Palate: It is full-bodied and complex with an oak-forward character. Flavours include dark red berries, creamy vanilla, ginger, sweet spice, and aniseed.

  • Body: Full-bodied, with a complex and creamy mouthfeel.

  • Finish: The finish is mouth-watering and medium to long, with pleasant sweetness, ripe figs, and lingering hazelnut.

  • Stylistic Notes: This is a complex dram with an elegant depth that balances the vibrant island spirit with the rich influence of the Spanish red wine casks.

  • ABV: The spirit is bottled at 50% ABV and is non-chill filtered.
